“How much time does it require to prepare for my test?”

This is the million dollar question people ask me all the time. To be honest, This is a question people ask me all the time. My answer is now, and will continue to be………………………. It depends.

There are many factors that play into proper test preparation. This is the reason why we do a test preparation assessment. The assessment gives us a marker to give us an idea of how much test preparation each particular applicant will require. This is a cost and time saving tool.

I meet people from many walks of life. Actually, I get to meet people from all over the world. I have had clients from Spain, Alaska, The U.K., Japan, the Ukraine, and many other places across the globe.

People come from different social-economic parts of society. So I have come to the conclusion that some people are more prepared for the test than others. This why we offer an assessment. The assessment gives us an indication of whether you need us or not.

I have met three applicants during my teaching, tutoring, and flight training career who didn’t need my services at all. I ran them through a battery of test questions that I prepared, and they knocked the questions down as quickly as I could put them on the screen. After the assessment I simply state,”You don’t need us.” LOL.

We used to offer a free take home test that I would email to people for the ASTB-E (U.S. Naval Aviation Selection Test Battery) It was free at the time before it became outdated but it was not just a free test. It was actually a group of questions pooled together to give me an indication of what a client needed to prepare for the test. In short, I was able to see where a client’s weak area were based on the return emails I got. I sent applicants this exam with no answer key.

I complied data for about 2 and half years, and have come up with a really great system that help us see,”Where YOU are…” when it comes to actually being prepared for this test. Most of these tests only allot 2 to 3 attempts in a lifetime. So I liken it to an angry elephant running towards you, and you only have 2 or 3 bullets in your gun. EVERY ROUND COUNTS!

So I recommend clients take the assessment. It saves a lot a time and anxiety for many applicants. See how well you will perform under simulated testing conditions. I call it “KNOW BEFORE YOU GO!”

Capt. Kieno, A very thorough tutor, he will walk you through any question or topic you need help with. He makes himself as available as he can. In his words he described his tutoring approach is like a building remodeling crew in that “I walk through with you to identity your weaknesses and work to break those down and rebuild them stronger than ever” I can attest that every word of this is true. He has already identified some of my weaknesses and I notice myself getting better with them with each session.

Are you ready for the test is the question, some armed forces recruiters will tell applicants,”Just take the test, and see where you are.” I would advise against it. In most cases, you will have two or three attempts maximum. That depends on the test you are taking.

For instance, you can only take the Navy’s Aviation Selection Test Battery three times in your life. The U.S. Army’s Selection Instrument for Flight Training allows two attempts. As a military test preparation tutor, I can assure you that you will get harder questions on the second and third attempt. I liken it to a mad elephant running towards you, and you have a rifle with three rounds in it.

Would you rather know a little about that elephant’s anatomy, or learn where some possible weak areas were in the elephant. Or, just take a stab at it which it what the above mentioned recruiter suggested.

Some times I cringe a bit, when a prospective client tells me, “I’ve taken the OAR(Naval Officer’s Aptitude Rating Test) twice, and I have one more shot at it.” I cringe on the other end of the phone or video conferencing screen because I know exactly what they are facing.

At that point, all I can do is prepare them as best I can. I know they have fired two rounds at the elephant, and think to myself,”They have one round remaining…..”

I cannot emphasize the importance of being ready the first time. “If only I was ready when the opportunity presented itself to execute and move forward.” I am a little older than most people reading this blog, but readiness is paramount when you decide to do extraordinary things in life.

You graduated from high school, and for four years for most of us. We passed a building or a room called a library everyday for four years. Most teachers and counselors will never tell the students about the importance of preparing for life after high school. Now, it’s not my intention to beat up the public school system, I don’t need to tell you that it fails us in many instances.

The question you need to ask is,”Whose fault is it?” Well, blame yourself. Don’t worry, I am not playing Mr. PERFECT here because I did the same thing. There are many areas in life where I’ve lost many opportunities. At some point, I woke up. The earlier you wake up, the earlier you can get yourself positioned. AND GET READY!

If you think this test is a trip. Try being in command and having to make quick decisions where lives hang in the balance of every decision you make. It’s crazy when you actually wrap your head around that for a minute. So wake up, prepare yourself, and don’t waste time. These exams are only precursors to what lies ahead. Time is your most precious resource. In my logo, I have engraved the latin words,”SUBSITO SOMNIUM SATUS EFFECTUS!” It means, stop dreaming and start doing.

You can dream of doing a lot of things in life, but if you don’t take steps, and more importantly the proper steps. You will never make it. There are two types of clients I get when I extend my test prep services, those who listen, and those to hear. WHICH ONE ARE YOU?
